OUR JOURNEY
From Otara New Zealand to Hilo — and Beyond
Studio Shaka didn't begin with a building.
It began with an idea.
Years ago, that idea took shape for us in Otara Aotearoa New Zealand, through the High Tech Youth Network and the extraordinary community surrounding Studio 274.
There, we saw something that would forever change the way we thought about education.
Young people were trusted.
They were given access to technology, creative tools, mentors and a place that belonged to them.
They weren't simply being taught how to use technology.
They were using technology to discover who they could become.
They made music.
They created videos.
They designed.
They experimented.
They collaborated.
They solved problems.
And perhaps most importantly, they developed confidence, relationships and a sense of belonging.
We saw what could happen when young people were given a creative space, caring adults and permission to explore.
And we carried that lesson home.
BRINGING IT HOME
Hilo, Hawaiʻi
The idea traveled across the Pacific.
But it wasn't about copying something from New Zealand and recreating it in Hawaiʻi.
It was about taking what we had learned and allowing it to grow roots in our own community.
Studio Shaka became our Hilo expression of that idea.
A place shaped by our students.
Our educators.
Our community.
Our culture.
And our aloha.
Over the years, the technology has changed.
The equipment has changed.
The projects have changed.
But the belief has remained remarkably simple:
Give young people access.
Surround them with people who believe in them.
Let them create.
Then get out of the way and see what happens.
FROM PARTICIPATION TO OWNERSHIP
Studio Shaka has never been about keeping students busy after school.
It is about ownership.
Ownership of an idea.
Ownership of a project.
Ownership of a mistake.
Ownership of a success.
Ownership of a microphone.
Ownership of a business.
Ownership of their learning.
Ownership of their future.
That philosophy eventually became three words that continue to guide us:
KNOW IT.
OWN IT.
LIVE IT.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
Today, Studio Shaka is entering another era.
The creative technology center we once imagined has grown into something larger.
Students are becoming broadcasters through Connections Radio.
They are becoming entrepreneurs through Shaka Shack.
They are becoming recording engineers, producers, musicians and storytellers through our music and recording arts programs.
And through relationships with educators and organizations such as 4 Learning and the High School for Recording Arts, we continue exploring how the studio itself can become a new kind of classroom.
A classroom without traditional walls.
A classroom built around curiosity.
A classroom where mathematics might live inside a recording session, communication skills develop behind a microphone, economics emerges from a student business and history comes alive through an interview with a kupuna.
THE CIRCLE CONTINUES
Perhaps the most meaningful part of the Studio Shaka story is that the idea continues to travel.
We were once the educators traveling across the Pacific to learn from others.
We came home inspired.
We experimented.
We adapted.
We built.
We made mistakes.
We learned alongside our students.
And now educators from other communities and other parts of the world can come to Hilo and see what our students are creating.
Then they can take an idea home.
That is how change spreads.
Not through a program manual.
Not through a piece of equipment.
Not through a building.
Through people.
One educator inspires another.
One mentor believes in one student.
One student discovers a gift.
One studio becomes another studio.
One community learns from another.
And an idea that once traveled from Aotearoa across the Pacific to Hilo begins another journey.

FROM HILO TO THE WORLD.
We will always be grateful to the people and places that helped inspire this journey.
Now our kuleana is to keep it moving.
To open the doors.
To share what we've learned.
To learn from others.
And most importantly, to make sure another generation of young people has a place where someone can hand them a microphone, a camera, a computer, a tool or an idea and say:
"Try."
Because sometimes that is where everything begins.
